So, after a very long while I was back on a track. Willow Springs is in Southern California, about one and a half hours from Los Angles, and three hours from Las Vegas. I was only racing on Saturday so I woke up real early and drove out to the track.
Willow Springs has three tracks. There is big willow, streets of willow, and the horse thief mile. I would be racing on the street of willow track in the counter clockwise direction. The top of the picture you can see the dark lines of the horse thief track, it is mostly used as a drift track cause it’s so tight, motorcycles love it too.
This was also the third stop in the S2K challenge, so a lot of fast cars came to play.
With Transponder attached I set out.
The Car preformed great. I wasn’t sure how all the new parts where going to work, but they preformed excellent. The coilovers where set two clicks from their stiffest setting, and the roll bar was at it’s middle setting. I stared the day with tires at 33lbs front and rear, and adjusted them to keep up with the track. The hotter the day got the more slippery the track got. The New Falken’s worked great and really stuck to the track all day. The Problem I had last track day was brakes, they faded. Not this time the new Hawk pads held up great through all the high speed stops.
Not to say there isn’t work to be done. I still need more power, but that is going t have to wait til the off season. I need an oil cooler, don’t have a gauge to tell me how hot it got, but is was high. This will be my next install along with some more weight savings. Colin Chapman use to say “add lightness”, also a graphics package is in the works.
There was some real fast cars out there so it was tough to judge the car against it’s competion.
This wide bodied M3 was sporting a supercharged engine and 600hp, the little Integra was no match.
Now this is how you drive an S4! The owner was seriously beating his car like a rented mule, good to see these cars used the right way.
So the best time for the day was a 1:43.395. I was consistent with 10 laps within half a second of each other. I felt there was more in the car than I could extract, I need to get more practice. With a little more experience and a few more mods i hope to get back to Willow Springs this year and knock off a few seconds off this time.
